Restoration of the monument of Leopold II

The monument at the center of Piazza di San Miniato Bonaparte, made of white marble, is based on a typical sandstone staircase that rises from the road and is enclosed by a balustrade along the perimeter of cast iron of fine workmanship.
The appearance of the work presented before the restoration, the typical superficial of a monument constantly exposed to the action of atmospheric agents and disruptive, not least, the pollutants in urban areas.
For the restoration of the monument, it was assumed that an intervention, according to our experience, would restore as far as possible the appearance of the statue and, more importantly, would stop all those destructive processes currently in place, inevitably extending the life of the monument.
The intervention consisted of the following steps ::
- Clean the surface of the stone surface using brushes plant and careful removal of deposits little concrete evidence by washing with solutions varying percentages of ammonium;
- Cycles of wraps based on sepiolite with a solution of ammonium carbonate or of edta disodium to facilitate the solubilization of black crusts concretions (where the black crusts were tougher we intervened with scalpel to complete the cleanup operations);
- Final Rinse with deionized water for the removal of processing residues and possible traces of dirt still not removed;
- Plasting of lesions using marble powder combined with slaked lime or in some cases combined with fluorinated products in acetone;
- Consolidation carried out using ethyl silicate surface with a brush to apply more coats
- Protective end with the application of a product based on siloxane applied by brush
Upon completion of the restoration of the marble statue, steps were taken to clean and the ultimate protection of both elements in bronze, cast iron balustrade decorated.
