THE RESTORATION OF LEOPOLD II Francesco Fiumalbi from the site www.smartarc.blogspot.it

Finally!
After 169 years, the statue of Leopold II, said "Canapone", has returned to its original splendor. We had the announcement of the beginning of the restoration work May 16, 2012, and with a punctuality worthy of a Swiss watch, after 35 days "in surgery", the statue of Grand Duke is back as August 1843, when was inaugurated in solemn celebrations.
Now we can appreciate in its perfection, the plasticity of the work that the neoclassical sculptor Luigi Pampaloni had fashioned from a block of marble Ravaccione, a variety of white Carrara among the most appreciated in the world. The statue is back, as white as snow, in the ideal of absolute purity and nobility, with whom he was honored with the Grand Duke for the City of San Miniato's Collegiate Court of First Instance, the Governor's, the Savings Bank. The whole square Buonaparte has renovated the monument, as a new light, from the center of gravity, radiating all around.

An applause to the company "Restauro Valeri srl" di Camaiore (Lu) for their excellent work, and the City Administration, which has averted lost of one of the most important monuments of San Miniato. The surgery, which costs 17,900 euros, was not only aesthetic: the cleaning of large surface deposits, was followed by the consolidation of the marble to prevent any craquelure, cracks and microfractures, which would seriously compromise the long term stability the sculpture
